How to Volunteer with the Tutorfair Foundation
How to Volunteer with the Tutorfair Foundation Volunteering is the answer for so many people with an interest or experience in education. Weâre all aware that there are young people out there who could use our help, and that spending some time working in schools can have a large impact and can be extremely rewarding. But where to start? What kind of opportunities are out there and how can you get involved? Whether youâre an experienced tutor looking to share your skills or a student considering a career in teaching, The Tutorfair Foundation might have something thatâs just right for you. Who are we? The Tutorfair Foundation is the charitable wing of Tutorfair â" an online marketplace for private tutoring. Funded by donations from paying clients of Tutorfair, we work with volunteers to provide support to students from a broad range of backgrounds that might not otherwise have access to the help. We hope that by improving access to quality tutoring, we can make a positive contribution to the fight against educational inequality â" one student at a time. What are we up to? This year, weâll be running in-school tutoring in London, home visits in Birmingham and online opportunities everywhere else. âIn-schoolâ programmes involve our volunteers tutoring students in schools where the student population is more than 50% pupil premium eligible. This might involve working in a classroom (supporting a qualified teacher) or engaging students one-to-one or in small groups outside of lessons. Where we think there will be good engagement, weâll work with schools to set up an after school club for those students who are staying behind to get on top of their homework. âOnlineâ volunteering takes place using our Tutorfair On-Demand service. This is a text-and-image based platform available for free to eligible schools, whose students can log in during homework hours to post questions and topics theyâre struggling with. If youâre volunteering at that time, youâll see the questions being posted and be able to connect instantly with the student to help them through their problem. We have in-school programmes underway already this year in London, with opportunities available for volunteers to tutor everything from GCSE Maths to BTEC Health Social Care. Weâre also looking for volunteers to get involved in Birmingham, where weâre offering help to a number of students who have been suffering from bullying. Tutorfair On-Demand will launch at the end of October, so if youâre looking to start volunteering, thereâs plenty of ways to get involved! What can you expect when you volunteer? Every volunteerâs experience will be different, but there are a few things you can expect when you decide to get involved. Minimum commitment of 10 hours: usually 1 hour a week for 10 weeks. Tutors are welcome to complete their 10 hours and decide whether to continue later on! Training and free DBS check: this is dependent on the tutor's level of experience Support from our programme managers: depending on how long tutors are with us, weâll also do observations; providing feedback and development opportunities throughout your placement. Want to get involved? Here's how to sign up! If youâre already a tutor with Tutorfair, all of our volunteering opportunities will appear on your profile in the âopportunitiesâ section. If youâre not already a tutor with Tutorfair, you can register your interest here and someone from the team will get in touch to discuss the opportunities with you. We currently have opportunities in London and Birmingham. For in-school opportunities, if you have lots of experience, weâll be able to get you a DBS check and start you straight away. If you have less experience, weâll invite you to one of our training sessions. Some of our placements are only available to volunteers with some tutoring experience, but we have lots of opportunities available for people with no experience looking for a way into education. If youâre applying to tutor online, weâll train you online. This will allow you to volunteer much more flexibly â" agreeing availability in advance for any time between 6 and 9pm on weekdays and 5 and 8pm on weekends. You can support students who need help from wherever you are â" home, work or university. For any enquiries please email: foundation@tutorfair.com

Ditch Your Alarm Clock for Foreign Language Distance Education Courses
Ditch Your Alarm Clock for Foreign Language Distance Education Courses Ditch Your Alarm Clock for Foreign Language Distance Education Courses Online learning is not the next big thing, it is the now big thing. â"D. AbernathyWhat if I could show you a way to shut down that pesky alarm clock once and for all? What if you could stop hitting the snooze button every morning before you finally drag yourself out of your warm, comfy bed to go to your language class? What if I told you that you wouldnt have to make your life revolve around any schedule except your own?Would you be hanging on my every word, waiting for me to spill the beans?Of course you would! Its your language programâ"why not have it on your schedule?I hear you wondering how you can possibly do that. But the truth is, its pretty simple: Distance education. It brings language learning to youâ"on your terms and in your time.If youre interested in a foreign language degree or looking for the opportunity to take courses from a college (even if youre not after college credits), distance education is the way to do that.Distance learning is different from other onli ne learning in that its associated with colleges and universities and often involves degrees or certifications.Worried youre too old to go back to school, or that youve missed your chance? Consider the 81-year-old Chinese woman who got her bachelors degree through distance learning. (Interestingly enough, completely aside from this, she also taught herself to speak multiple foreign languagesâ"the degree was in e-commerce.)She certainly achieved her goalâ"and in the comfort of her own home!If youre worried you wont be able to find a great distance language program, worry no more. Theres something for everyone, especially where foreign languages are concerned. Were a world full of communicators! The first step in finding the perfect program is examining your options.Weve got some good ones here, so lets check them out and get you started! Why Distance Learning WorksDistance learning continues to be a growing trend for many reasons. Honestly, were all so pressed for time and juggle such crazy schedules that making it to another commitmentâ"even a language class that we loveâ"is often just too difficult.Distance-learning courses can be much more flexible with regards to scheduling and space. Okay, so you may not want to ditch that alarm clock completely yet, as this doesnt mean that there are never any time or course limitations whatsoever, but you may find that online language courses have fewer limitations due to being online. Many programs still have very specific degree requirements, so youll want to check out the particulars of each course at registration and do your research ahead of time. However, some courses available through distance learning dont adhere to a traditional semester and can be taken all year round, over the summer or at other times.More flexibility means more likelihood of choosing the language classes that are a perfect match for you. No more taking a course thatâs too advanced or one thats a bit basic just because it was the only one available when you were, or missing out on the rarer language you really wanted to take because it clashes with another requirement. And distance learning eliminates the need to travel. No more going to learningâ"now, learning comes to you! Whats not to love? How to Maximize Your Distance Learning ExperienceWhether the course you choose focuses on independent study (you do the work without any online classmates) or features a virtual classroom where interaction with other learners is an option, try to participate as much as possible.Submit materials for critique, ask questions and take part in online discussions. Communicate with your teacher and fellow students to get the most out of the experience. After all, language is all about communication. The discussion sessions in many online courses provide loads of information. Others may be grappling with the same grammar issues you are, so take note when relevant topics come up.You all share a passion for the language youre studyin g, so see the friendship potential in your classmates. Who knows? You may find a great online study partner for post-class learning. Be friendly and learn from your peers.Treat the course just like you would a real-life class. Yes, I know youll probably be wearing yoga pants or maybe even your PJs when you log on, but dress code aside, approach distance learning as you would any other class. Be prepared to learn and do any assigned homework, and if youâre in a virtual setting with other learners, be sure to arrive on time.Class instructors are usually available through a contact link or email. Use it. If youre having a grammar or vocabulary issue or just have questions, speak up! Theyre generally quick to respond and you may bring up something that needs further classroom discussion. Chances are that if youve got questions, others do, too!Practice your language outside of the course on your own time with FluentU, so you can put what youre learning into practice. FluentU takes re al-world videosâ"like movie trailers, music videos, news and inspiring talksâ"and turns them into personalized language lessons. Transgender Bathroom Policies The Fight Continues
Transgender Bathroom Policies The Fight Continues pixabay.com For many, this poses either a threat (theyâre concerned that opening up bathroom issues will mean that sexual predators will take advantage) or comfort (they arenât comfortable sharing a bathroom with someone they donât understand/identify with). While the arguments are hardly valid (as the tables could just as easily be turned in saying that transgender people are using bathrooms with people they canât identify with or that sexual predators werenât going to be stopped by a little blue or pink sign anyway), the issue is still being fought on both sides. The judge in Texas granted the state a preliminary injunction (including a few other states as well) that challenges the Obama administrationâs interpretation of Title IX. For those that arenât familiar with it, Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in schools, colleges and universities. While the administration interprets this to include gender identity discrimination, the judge in Texas disagrees. Judge Reed OâConnor, the judge that issued the ruling, is from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He issued the ruling late on Sunday night, just before the school year began for many Texas students. Immediately, LGBT supporters were let down. The LGBT rights supporters claim that this issue was only going to be helped through the administrationâs interjection, but right now, things arenât looking up. According to OâConnor: âThis case presents the difficult issue of balancing the protection of studentsâ rights and that of personal privacy when using school bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and other intimate facilities, while ensuring that no student is unnecessarily marginalized while attending school.â So why did he grant the injunction? According to him, it was because Title IXâs text âis not ambiguous.â Essentially, he is saying that there isnât any room for interpretation. According to him, the law, âspecifically permits educational institutions to provide separate toilets, locker rooms, and showers based on sex, provided that the separate facilities are comparable.â And last May, the Obama administration did some interpreting. They issued a guidance that instructed public schools that âschools receiving federal money may not discriminate based on a studentâs sex, including a studentâs transgender status.â According to the administration, the Department of Education and the Department of Justice âtreat a studentâs gender identity as the studentâs sex for purposes of the law.â Really, this doesnât seem to be a big deal, especially since there really arenât many transgender students to begin with. According to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, âThere is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex.â However, on the opposing end, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (the man who led the charge against the administration), said in a statement: âWe are pleased that the court ruled against the Obama administrationâs latest illegal federal overreach. This President is attempting to rewrite the laws enacted by the elected representatives of the people, and is threatening to take away federal funding from schools to force them to conform. That cannot be allowed to continue, which is why we took action to protect States and School Districts, who are charged under state law to establish a safe and disciplined environment conducive to student learning.â According to Justice Department spokesperson, Dena Iverson, âthe department is disappointed in the courtâs decision, and we are reviewing our options. And the department is not the only one that disagrees with the ruling. Civil Rights Groups, feminists and liberals almost universally agree this is an unfortunate ruling. According to Lambda Legal, the ACLU and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, âa ruling by a single judge in one circuit cannot and does not undo the years of clear legal precedent nationwide establishing that transgender students have the right to go to school without being singled out for discrimination.â The issue is a huge let down for individuals that refer to themselves as the âminority.â But again, this has only been one ruling, and the President is working hard to leave behind a legacy of acceptance and peace. So you can bet this isnât the last Texas will be hearing of the bathroom issue.
How a Film Director Learns Arabic on italki
How a Film Director Learns Arabic on italki We love to hear how our italki users are overcoming the challenges of learning languages, and Nicole Ballivian has quite a story to share with us. Read on to learn about Nicole and her language learning experiences. Nicole and an actor in Hebron _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Tell us a little about yourself Im an American Film Director who usually makes international movies. A Sundance Screenwriters Lab Fellow and recipient of a few international awards for films. [Check out her site www.bintfilm.com] What language are you learning? Arabic. What would you say your level is now? My level started at intermediate, and since Ive been taking it intensively for three months, Id say Im uber-intermediate now. Why are you learning that language? I have the aim of becoming fluent in the Palestinian dialect of Arabic in order to communicate clearly with my cast for my upcoming film to be shot in the West Bank city of Hebron. Its called Sleeping on Stones. The Sleeping on Stones film was selected for the 2012 Cairo Film Connection at the Cairo International Film Festival. What are you using/doing to improve your fluency? I am taking classes three times a week with a Palestinian teacher and Im going on Youtube to scope out any Palestinian videos that have English subtitles. Also practicing with Palestinian friends and local liquor store owners. What difficulties have you had learning this language? Arabic grammar even in the ammiya version (spoken, colloquial) is very difficult. Verb conjugation can be intimidating but as long as I keep trying and dont mind sounding like a five-year-old for now, I know Ill get it eventually. What tips would you have for people learning this or any other language? I would say in order to learn a language fluently (as I speak Spanish and French as well, took Russian in high school and college), you have to consistently immerse yourself in it. You have to speak it a lot. Force your brain to think in the language as if you were living in a foreign country. Ways to do this is by taking classes with a native speaker multiple times a week. Watch the news in the language so you can pair images with words. Write down vocabulary and verb conjugations, go through them daily. Practice with friends or make friends on italki. Dont be shy and get corrected a lot; it will only help you learn more quickly in the end. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ If you would like to learn more about Nicole and her movies, check out: www.bintfilm.com Have an interesting story to share with us? How to Find a Good Tutor
How to Find a Good TutorWhen you are considering learning how to tutor at home, you may be unsure as to what a good tutor will look like, what it will cost you, and what you can expect from the tutor. You are not alone in wondering about these things. In this article I will give you some useful information that will help you in your quest to find a great tutor. Remember, you are free to choose the method of learning that is best for you, however, remember to go for the methods that can benefit you the most. Below are some tips on choosing a good tutor.School certification- Make sure that the tutor you choose has proper certification. The certifications must have been provided by either the United States Educational Testing Service (ETS) or a national group like the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). You can look for this on the internet but make sure that you get a copy of the certification before you hire a tutor. Without the certificate, you cannot hold the person responsible for the tutor's performance.Private tutors- This is another way of finding a good tutor. There are many, many private tutors who have their own curriculum and will offer you some free lessons. Be sure to ask if they charge a fee, and if they do, make sure you know what the fees are. You should also ask how many lessons are included in the fees, since you will need to pay an hourly rate.Cost - The cost of the tutor is important, so make sure that you consider all the costs before you choose a tutor. Ask for quotations, and make sure that you are very clear on all the costs. The last thing you want is to hire a tutor only to find out later that you spent too much money. With these tips, you should have a better chance of finding a tutor that will help you learn how to tutor at home. If you are good at math, you may want to take up tutoring with a tutor who is really good at math. If you are a great singer, but just not good at reading, consider getting lessons from a tutor who sings a little. You will get much better results from a tutor who is a good singer than one who does not sing at all.You should consider how you can learn about the different aspects of the subject. Getting a good tutor will help you be successful in your goals of being able to tutor at home.
